Belarus' veterinary service commended by OIE

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) commends Belarus for the organization of the veterinary activities in the country, Secretary General of the OIE Regional Commission for Europe Budimir Plavsic, BelTA has learned.

"We have such an instrument: we evaluate the veterinary service of a country's acting as experts. Today we note with satisfaction that Belarus is one of the most advanced countries in the region in the field of veterinary medicine, with very good staff who are trained by the Veterinary Academy in Vitebsk," said Budimir Plavsic.

He also noted that Belarus has a good system of skill improvement. "In addition, the country has built a stable structure of the veterinary service with very good management of national resources and coordination. The country allocates enough funds to deal with emergency situations, particularly with regard to dangerous animal diseases. There are quite a number of laboratories in the country. Especially I would like to note the Belarusian State Veterinary Center which operates a good quality assurance system, and meets all the standards. Regional laboratories are also well equipped," said Budimir Plavsic.

According to the expert, Belarus has reliable veterinary controls on the border, and also a system of examining food and feed for harmful substances.

"We are satisfied that the country has started to introduce a reliable system of identification of animals, which is facilitated by the good legislation and advanced software," said Budimir Plavsic.

"We will not recommend the country's veterinary service making any immediate major changes, and will welcome its further development and cooperation with neighboring countries and Europe as a whole," the expert said.

OIE experts worked in Belarus for two weeks. "We came at the request of the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Vasily Pivovar because Belarus is an active member of our organization," head of the OIE Office for Eastern Europe Kazimieras Lukauskas said.
