Belarus to approve 2016 budget in current rubles

Belarus' budget for 2016 will be approved without taking the planned redenomination into account, First Deputy Finance Minister Maksim Yermolovich told BelTA.

"The budget will be approved in the prices as of 1 January 2016, i.e. without taking into account redenomination. Once the Belarusian ruble is redenominated on 1 July 2016, all the budget targets will be revised," said Maksim Yermolovich. Only the nominal value is to change, he added. The real cost of the budgetary resources and their paying capacity will remain intact.

Maksim Yermolovich expressed confidence that there would be no problems with the fulfillment of the obligations in connection with the forthcoming redenomination. "The question is how correctly the contracts will be concluded with local authorities and budget recipients. We are working on, to avoid confusion, economic disputes. It is a technical matter. We have enough professionals who can do this job at a high level," said the Deputy Minister.

The Belarusian ruble will be redenominated on 1 July 2016. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed decree No. 450 "Concerning the redenomination of the official currency of the Republic of Belarus" on 4 November. The document specifies that the official currency of the Republic of Belarus will be redenominated on 1 July 2016. As a result, all banknotes designed in 2000 will be replaced by banknotes and coins designed in 2009 in the following ratio: Br10,000 will become Br1.

From 1 July 2016 to 31 December 2016 monetary units of the 2000 design and monetary units of the 2009 design will be used simultaneously and will be accepted in kinds of payments without restriction in the abovementioned ratio. Banknotes designed in 2000 can be replaced by banknotes designed in 2009 without restrictions and additional fees in the period from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019 at the National Bank, banks and non-bank credit and financial institutions of the Republic of Belarus. In the period from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 they can be replaced at the National Bank.
