Lukashenko taking part in SCO summit in Astana

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is taking part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko arrived at the Palace of Independence in Astana, where he was greeted by the host of the summit, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The Belarusian president will take part in the SCO Heads of State Council meeting. Completing the procedure for Belarus’ accession to the SCO as a member state will be the main item on the summit’s agenda for Belarus. In his speech during the summit Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to touch upon the most significant directions in the organization’s work and the contribution Belarus is ready to make to the accomplishment of common tasks.

Participants of the SCO Heads of State Council session will discuss matters concerning further improvement of the integration association’s work with a view to strengthening and deepening multilateral interaction in new conditions. They will also take a look at current international and regional affairs in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization region. All in all, the heads of state are expected to adopt more than two dozen decisions and statements, including the ones related to the initiative “On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony”, the SCO draft development strategy until 2035, improvement of the organization’s activities, cooperation in economy, investment, finance and energy, environment and environmental protection, information security, as well as fight against terrorism, extremism, and  drug trafficking.

Aleksandr Lukashenko will also attend the SCO+ meeting along with leaders of observer states, distinguished guests, and heads of international organizations. This meeting will be held in Astana on the same day and will focus on “Strengthening multilateral dialogue - the pursuit of sustainable peace and development”.
