Lukashenko hosts meeting to discuss Belarus' border security

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko hosted a meeting on 2 May to discuss the current issues related to the country's border security and measures needed to protect it, BelTA has learned.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the situation around Belarus remains difficult. NATO is building up its military presence near the borders and there are provocations on the border.

“We could not postpone this meeting: the situation forces us to respond to the recent developments. The government and the law enforcement agencies have been instructed to work out measures on the border to prevent all kinds of infiltrators from entering Belarus. Such cases have been on the rise lately. Therefore, I would like to hear comprehensive proposals on counter measures,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel, based on the information coming from intelligence and other units, there are forecasts of a significant aggravation of the operational situation around Belarus.

The internal affairs minister and the chairman of the State Border Committee were also among the keynote speakers. The meeting was closed to the press, so all reports were heard out in private.

Ivan Tertel told the media after the meeting why the State Security Committee forecast a significant escalation of the situation along the perimeter of Belarus. “This is due, firstly, to the hostilities in the southern direction. Everything is connected with this now. Secondly, attempts to destabilize the situation inside our country do not stop. These attempts are undertaken, first of all, by the centers abroad that plan this activity with the support of direct curators, including from among foreign special services. A number of such serious events are planned on our territory. Sponsors do not offer another way out for those who have already fallen into their clutches. The sponsors are foreign interested parties, both individuals and special services and other organizations. Given these conditions, the head of state wanted us to craft the proposals on how we respond to all these challenges," the KGB head said.

According to him, new facts of detentions and the results of the counterintelligence work will be made public in the near future. "We work quietly every day. The head of state personally oversees it and knows all the details. In the near future (a week and a half) we will show the results of this work. Unfortunately, not all of our citizens are yet aware of the dangers around them, around their families. Therefore, we will show the real materials, real detentions, counterintelligence work, the work of the units for the protection of the constitutional order that prevent terrorist attacks. We will make this information public so that our people understand what we are dealing with," Ivan Tertel said.

Chairman of the State Border Committee Anatoly Lappo said, in his turn, that the president was updated on the situation at the border, the formation of mobile team and their equipment. "We have one mobile team in the Mozyr detachment (about 300 people). In the light of the current situation we are deploying another mobile team in the Lida direction and keep one more as a reserve in the Brest direction. We may not need them there in autumn. In that case they will be transfered to another direction. The situation at the border is under control," the chairman of the State Border Committee said.
